You show up on time, work hard, and go above and beyond each day. Clearly, you deserve a promotion. But how do you ask for one? It’s not as simple as you might think. In fact, there’s some homework you’ll have to do ahead of time to make the case to your boss. Here’s what you need to know:
Create a list of accomplishments.
Your boss is busy and isn’t always aware of all that you do. It’s up to you to tell them about it. So come up with a list of recent accomplishments and quantify their value, for instance with the amount of time or money you saved, or how you increase sales or attracted new customers. This demonstrates to your boss in concrete ways why you deserve a promotion.
Know your worth.
Before you walk into a conversation with your boss about a promotion – and a potential salary increase – you also need to know what you’re worth on the employment market. So do some research on sites like Payscale.com and Salary.com to find out salary averages for a professional with your level of experience in the Kansas City area. That way, you can ensure you’re getting compensated fairly should you get promoted.
Set up a meeting.
Don’t blindside your boss by barging into their office unexpectedly. Asking for a promotion is a delicate conversation and you and your boss both need to set aside private time for it. So reach out to them and schedule a meeting. Let them know ahead of time you want to discuss your future with the company and career advancement, so they have time to prepare, too.
Ask for more responsibility.
If you make your case and your boss turns you down, ask why. Perhaps there’s a certain skill you need to obtain or area in which you need to develop.
