Struggling to Find Qualified Talent? Here’s What to Do

Finding great people for your company is a lot harder than it sounds. You might get an influx of resumes for your openings. But very few are from qualified candidates. Or perhaps you’re not getting enough resumes at all. Whatever the case – you’re struggling to find good talent. What can you do? Here are 4 tips to help you:

Tip #1: Evaluate your postings.

If you’re having a hard time finding qualified talent, it can often stem from a weak job posting. Sometimes, employers get so hung up on finding the perfect candidate that they end up creating complicated, long-winded job postings that attract few candidates.

Your posting might be too vague or too long – but it needs to be clear, concise, and compelling to attract the best potential hires. You also need to communicate ‘what’s in it for the candidate’. In other words, why would someone want to work for your company?

Tip #2: Study the competition.

Find out whether there are a lot of Kansas City companies looking for similar talent as you and how competitive your salary and benefits are compared to them. You may find there are many employers hiring the kind of candidates you need – and they’re winning out because they’re offering more money or better benefits. It’s up to you to find ways to stand out in the crowd…but first, you need to know what others are offering.

Tip #3: Put your company out there.

Are you simply posting a job on an online job board and expecting great results? While job boards can certainly play a part in your recruiting strategy, you need to think beyond them. For instance, participate in industry and recruiting events, like career fairs, trade shows and association meetings. Also, make sure you’re leveraging social media and a company career website to promote your job openings and employer brand.

Tip #4: Look internally.

If you’re having a hard time finding candidates and need to fill a position quickly, look internally. Are there any existing employees who could do the job with additional training or support? Filling jobs internally not only gives you access to candidates you know and trust, but also improves retention through opportunities for advancement.

Recruiting top talent isn’t always easy. So if you’re struggling, follow the tips above to improve your results – and gain access to the high quality candidates you need.
