The Candidate is Not on Any Social Networks…Should I Worry?

Imagine this scenario:

A candidate applies for a job at your company. They look great on paper and have all the right skills and experience. The trouble is, when you Google their name or search for them on LinkedIn, you come up empty-handed. Zilch. Nada. Nothing online about them.

Should you be concerned?

But, if you’re searching for your next engineer, accountant, or project manager, then not having any social media profiles is less worrisome. Keep in mind too, there could be a variety of good reasons as to why a particular candidate is not online, including:

  • They value their privacy and may intentionally be avoiding an online presence.
  • They were online at one point in time, but had issues with a cyber stalker.
  • They work in a career or field where social media or having a LinkedIn profile doesn’t add any real value. They also don’t see any need to provide career updates for the world to see.
  • They don’t have the time to be constantly updating an online profile.
  • They think they’re simply going to get ‘lost in the crowd’ on social media sites like LinkedIn. They prefer to take a unique or more creative approach to getting noticed by a hiring manager.

The lesson here?

In today’s day and age, it may seem strange to Google a candidate’s name and not find any results. But if you do have a candidate who interests you, don’t let their lack of a social media presence deter you from interviewing them. If it continues to bother you, ask them in the phone screen or during an interview why they’re not online. They could have a very good reason.
