Stay Positive During a Long Job Search by Networking

Job Networking

Finding a new job is no easy task. But as experienced Kansas City recruiters, Morgan Hunter knows it can be especially discouraging when you’ve applied to countless jobs – but haven’t landed any interviews.

How do you stay positive during such a daunting process? By networking.

Here are 5 tips on how you can leverage the power of networking during a long job search:

Tip #1: Do your homework.

Before you go out and start networking, you have to do your homework first. This includes figuring out exactly what type of job you’re looking for and making a list of the employers and key decision-makers within these companies you’d like to connect with.

It also includes creating and practicing an elevator speech, which is a 30-second statement that sums up what you do and the value you can provide to a potential employer. That way, when you meet one of the key people on your list, you’ll know exactly what to say when they ask: “What do you do?”

Tip #2: Create your plan of action.

You can’t spend every day, all day networking. So you need to be strategic about which networking events you attend. For instance, if you’re targeting small business owners in your job search, then networking events sponsored by the local chamber of commerce are a great opportunity.

Tip #3: Provide value.

Don’t just look at ‘what’s in it for you’ when networking. Consider how you can provide value to the contacts that you make. That means you have to invest time listening to their needs and asking questions. Some good icebreakers include asking about how they got started in their career or why they chose to work in a particular field.

If they have a challenge you can help with, then offer your assistance, whether it’s pointing them to a much-needed resource or referring someone you know would be a good fit for a job opening they have. However you help, you’ll create an immediate sense of gratitude.

Tip #4: Stay connected.

After you initially meet a new contact, it’s important to stay in touch. For example, if you find a blog post, online video, or podcast you think might interest them, send a quick email along with a link to it. It’s a great opportunity to provide value and stay top of mind with them.

Tip #5: Ask for help.

Once you’ve built a relationship with someone and feel you’ve added value to it, ask for help in your own job search. For instance, ask the person if they know anyone from your list of target employers, or if they can refer you to a hiring manager at one of the companies.

When you ask, remember your manners – always say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ And stay polite and professional even if they turn you down.

Job search success doesn’t always come easy. But when you invest the time and effort into effective networking, you can differentiate yourself from the competition, find out about opportunities faster, and ultimately land your dream job.
