What do you have planned for your career in 2020? If you’re not sure, then it’s a good time to set some goals. Not certain where to start? The Kansas City recruitment team at Morgan Hunter has the answers you need. Below are some tips for properly setting career goals that you can actually achieve:
Visualize your desired outcome.
Where do you want to end up? What do you want the final outcome of your career to be? Look to the end goal and work backward from there. When you have a clear vision for what you want the future to look like, you’ll be able to get more specific in terms of what you need to do in the next year, five to 10 years and further down the line in order to achieve your goals.
Make sure you’re being realistic.
If you’re in an entry level position and your goal is to become a CEO or an entrepreneur, don’t expect it to happen next month or even next year. You have a long road ahead of you before you reach your goal and if you don’t recognize and accept that, then it’s going to be easy to grow discouraged. So set smaller, more attainable goals, like taking classes to start to gain the skills you need. Then step-by-step, little-by-little, work toward your end goal.
Pursue something you’re committed to.
In order to reach a lofty goal, it has to be something you’re truly committed to and passionate about. Otherwise, you’ll run out of steam or get off track the first time an obstacle or issue comes up. Instead, you need to believe in your goal and that it’s important and attainable for you so that you have the proper mindset and motivation from the get-go.
Share your goal with others.
This might make you feel uncomfortable, but it also makes you accountable. When you have people you’ve shared your goals with, then you’re going to be more motivated, stay on track and feel a stronger sense of accomplishment throughout the whole process.
