The Future of Your IT Team: How to Recruit & Hire Millenials

Millenials are those born between 1980 and 2000 – and they’re the future of your IT team. So what’s your plan for recruiting them?

As one of the leading IT staffing agencies in Kansas City, Morgan Hunter knows if it’s the same as other generations, you’ve got a problem.

Millenials (also known as Gen Y’ers) have different needs and expectations when compared with Gen X’ers and Baby Boomers. Because they grew up using technology, they’re the most connected generation in history. In addition, they’re generally more confident in their abilities, strive for a better work life balance, and feel ready to take on the world.

The challenge, though, is finding and hiring the right ones for your IT team. Here are some tips to help you along the way:

Speak Their Language.

IT talent in general, and millenials specifically, are a lot more open to hearing your pitch when you speak their language, rather than launching into generic “recruiter” speak. But what if you’re not an IT expert? There is an answer – and it’s known as Geek Code.

Learn how to create your own Geek Code. Doing so will give you common ground with potential IT recruits – and a competitive advantage among other recruiters.

Take a More Casual Approach.

Recruiters are used to formal hiring processes, complete with interviews (or rounds of interviews) at the office. However, millenials prefer a more casual approach. So set up a meeting over coffee or lunch. Not only will the candidate likely be more comfortable in such a setting, but you’ll gain a truer sense of who they are as a result.

Ask Your IT Team for Referrals.

The existing millenials on your IT team are likely a rich source for potential candidates. Not only are they well connected, but they probably hang out with like-minded IT professionals who have similar skill sets…making the sourcing process a whole lot easier for you.

Create an IT Candidate Database.

Today’s millenials hop around from job to job much more than previous generations. As a result, turnover higher. So it’s important to develop a database of IT candidates that includes individuals who have worked with you in the past, job candidates who didn’t get hired, and those you meet via networking. Just because you don’t have a need for them now, doesn’t mean you won’t soon!
