Overland Park, Kansas – With local businesses facing a wildly volatile and uncertain job market during this time of pandemic, several area employers are finding innovative ways to use contract and temporary workers to keep their business moving forward.
Overland Park-based firm Morgan Hunter has already partnered with a variety of local companies to help them find temporary candidates who not only can fill a valuable need for the business but also have the skills and tools to complete the work from home.
“Many companies don’t have the budget – or want to assume the risk right now – to hire permanent staff, but the work still has to be done,” said Carol Schmidt, senior director of Morgan Hunter’s Human Resources division. “We’ve been able to match them with contract workers who can pinch hit – and work remotely – to make sure these businesses don’t stall during this health crisis.”
Schmidt’s team recently matched two local companies with contract recruiters—one covering for a maternity leave, the other assigned to a six-month project to keep up with the company’s hiring demands. Both workers were on-boarded virtually, including team introductions, orientation and training.
In Morgan Hunter’s Administrative division – which places executive assistants, data entry clerks, project coordinators, office managers and more – the team recently placed a receptionist at a local company in a temporary assignment. While the employee started on-site before the pandemic hit, the company saw an opportunity to set her up to work from home when it closed the office down.
“Most people don’t think of a receptionist as a role that can be handled from home, but our client was committed to making the accommodations to keep our candidate employed,” said Stephanie Smithmier, director of Morgan Hunter’s Administrative division. “The employee was excited and very grateful to be able to continue working, and the company kept a valuable resource in place who helps keep the business running smoothly.”
