Be flexible.
That said, sometimes you have to be flexible when it comes to setting and achieving goals. For instance, if you are looking for a new job, there may be a particular company you’re interested in working for. But then a friend refers you to a job at an organization you’ve never heard of. Be open to it. Even if you were set on your “dream employer,” unexpected opportunities can often be the best ones.
Be honest.
You might think you need to go in a certain direction in your career because that’s where everyone else in your field heads. But if that particular goal doesn’t motivate you, then what’s the point? If you don’t stay inspired, then you aren’t going to be able to overcome the inevitable obstacles you’ll face and achieve success. So it’s important to be honest with yourself when you’re setting your goals.
