How to Set Career Goals for 2015

The end of the year is almost here. Are you planning ahead – and setting goals – for the next one? As a Kansas City employment agency, Morgan Hunter knows if you want to move forward in your career, then doing so is critical. But it can certainly be easier said than done. How can you go about setting career goals for 2015 – ones you can actually achieve? Here are some tips to get you started:

Be clear about where you want to go.

Figuring out where you want to go in your career isn’t always easy. But it’s imperative if you want to set goals you actually can accomplish. While you might not know where you want to be five years from now, think about this time next year. What professional goals would you like to accomplish by then? If it’s to find a new job, for instance, then that’s a clear goal you can work toward.

Be concrete.

If your goal is to find a new job, don’t have the attitude of “I’ll take anything.” Be concrete about what you’re looking for. It’s understandable to not want to commit to something so specific because you don’t want to miss out on any opportunities. But when you’re not concrete about your goals, you won’t be able to move forward in your career.

Be flexible.

That said, sometimes you have to be flexible when it comes to setting and achieving goals. For instance, if you are looking for a new job, there may be a particular company you’re interested in working for. But then a friend refers you to a job at an organization you’ve never heard of. Be open to it. Even if you were set on your “dream employer,” unexpected opportunities can often be the best ones.

Be honest.

You might think you need to go in a certain direction in your career because that’s where everyone else in your field heads. But if that particular goal doesn’t motivate you, then what’s the point? If you don’t stay inspired, then you aren’t going to be able to overcome the inevitable obstacles you’ll face and achieve success. So it’s important to be honest with yourself when you’re setting your goals.
